Lucifuga subterranea Conservation Project

Protecting Cuba’s endemic cave fish through research, monitoring, and responsible exploration

A unique and fragile species

Lucifuga subterranea is an endemic blind cave fish found exclusively in Cuban flooded cave systems.
Perfectly adapted to life in total darkness, this species is highly sensitive to environmental changes and human impact. Because of its limited habitat and specialized adaptations, Lucifuga subterranea is considered extremely vulnerable to ecosystem disturbances.

Why conservation matters

Flooded cave ecosystems are among the most fragile environments on the planet.
Even minimal changes in water quality, sedimentation, or human presence can have long-term consequences for cave-adapted species. Protecting Lucifuga subterranea means protecting the entire underground ecosystem it depends on.

Project objectives

  • Monitor populations of Lucifuga subterranea in selected cave systems

  • Study habitat conditions and environmental parameters

  • Identify potential threats related to human activity and environmental change

  • Support long-term conservation strategies through data collection

  • Promote responsible access to flooded caves

How the project works

The project combines scientific research with carefully controlled cave diving activities.
All fieldwork follows strict protocols designed to minimize environmental impact and ensure data reliability. Diving activities are planned in collaboration with local scientists and speleologists, ensuring that exploration and research go hand in hand.

The role of cave diving

Cave diving provides access to environments that are otherwise unreachable.
When performed responsibly, it becomes a valuable tool for scientific observation and monitoring. All dives related to the project are conducted by experienced cave divers trained in low-impact techniques and environmental awareness.

Scientific collaboration

The Lucifuga subterranea Conservation Project is developed in collaboration with academic institutions, local scientific groups, and technical diving organizations.

Partners & Collaborators

  • University of Havana

  • Local speleological and scientific teams

  • Cuban Cuskeel Conservation Project partners

  • Technical diving equipment partners supporting fieldwork

Long-term vision

The goal of the project is not only to study Lucifuga subterranea, but to contribute to the long-term protection of Cuban flooded cave ecosystems. By combining research, education, and responsible diving practices, the project aims to create a sustainable model for underground ecosystem conservation.

How can you support the project

  • Participating in exploration-focused expeditions

  • Training responsibly as a cave diver

  • Supporting conservation and research initiatives

  • Promoting awareness of fragile cave ecosystems

Protecting Lucifuga subterranea means protecting one of Cuba’s most unique and fragile natural treasures—hidden beneath the surface, and still largely unknown.
