Luis Piedra Cave

Luis Piedra is the shallowest cave explored during our expedition, but one of the most complex in terms of navigation. With over 20 guidelines and 10 jump points, this system requires precise planning and orientation. Although initially explored in the early 2000s, the cave has never been fully mapped—a challenge our team has now undertaken.

What makes Luis Piedra particularly remarkable is its historical and biological significance. The remains of a Black slave estimated to be over 300 years old were discovered inside, highlighting the anthropological value of the site. It is also the cave with the highest known presence of the Lucifernaga subterranea, a Cuban endemic and endangered fish species currently under study by CubanCuskeel.
